Sony's handling of this problem is one reason that Omega Electronics ceased servicing Sony televisions under warranty.

History of the "Flickering" problem

Let me start by saying that this is my personal observations.  Sony originally wanted some surface mounted (tiny) parts changed.  Then they decided to replace all three CRTs.  Next they said only replace one CRT, and send it back for analysis.  If they don't find what they are looking for they will refuse to pay for parts or labor.

These models, as a group, have a history of bad CRTs.  They apparently have several different modes of failure.  Sony would only admit to a "flicker".  However many of these CRTs will arc internally.  Sometimes this damages the video driver IC, sometimes it will damage the focus/screen block.  My personal experience is that a set will have multiple bad CRTs.    Replacing only damaged parts without replacing the CRT will gain some time, until the CRT arcs again.

Q2: What about the blue dot or star pattern on the screen?

A2:  Models effected are: KDF-42WE655, KDF-50WE655, KDF-55WF655, KDF-60WF655, KDF-55XS955, KDF-60XS955, KF-42WE620, and KF-50WE620
